I agree. It is an issue in the church as a whole. One of my desires is for the church to understand her beauty in the middle of the mess we exist within – for every person to recognize who Christ has made them to be to the church and in the world, to embrace the fullness of the kingdom of God as we participate with God in its spreading throughout the whole earth… Many churches are structured around 1 gifted individual rather than a team of gifts to the church. Pastor gifts are often expected to be the teacher, evangelist, apostle, and prophet to the church rather than functioning as a part of a team. My hope is that apostle gifts can function as apostles who hold to the truth without needing to function as is they were teacher or pastor gifts – for evangelists to function as evangelists to the church, without needing to function as if they were pastor or teacher gits – for prophets to function as prophets to the church, without needing to function as if they were evangelist or apostle gifts, ad infinitum. Certainly there can be overlap (I am an apostle, teacher, pastor mix) and we are all expected to hold to the truth of the gospel unswervingly; however, if ones clearly understood their role within the body, complimentary teams could be developed with mutual edification and a sense of grace and freedom in Christ. There is certainly much more to write…

Well written and oh so accurate, Scott. I wish the problem with the church and the gifts stopped with the leadership. It seems like most people either think they have no gifts at all or that they have all of the gifts. And the church as a whole really doesn't seem to understand how to determine who has what gift. Gifts are mislabeled and hardly ever used. We really have a sad state of affairs. Instead of a group of people building each up in faith until we all reach maturity in Christ, as a group of interlocking body parts should, instead we are like a bunch of parts lying on some surgeons table, totally separated from each other. Most of it comes from ideas of leadership exactly like you wrote against in the post. People are selected the same way Nebuchadnezzar selected people for his court from amongst the Israelites. The handsomest, smartest, well formed, graceful, and well spoken people. God wanted the people with the most character, faith, and love of God, who don't compromise the truth. Turned out it was the same person when it came to Daniel and his friends, but they were only 4 out of perhaps 70 people! (not sure how they decided 70, but the scholars seem to think that many.) I wish there were more people like Daniel, and I wish there were more people who knew enough to realize what they are missing when there are not people like that in the church, or when they are not recognized and utilized. And I wish more people didn't let their gifts rot because they don't fit Nebs bill of who is a gifted person.

Hey brother. That is an awesome biography, very inspirational. Have you read "The Heavenly Man"? I'm just cracking it open on the recommendation of a friend. He became a believer after receiving a Bible that was smuggled into China by Brother Andrew. Some amazing stuff in there as well so far. We miss you all as well. It would be a privilege to work alongside you all again as well. Would love to hear an update on the jobs you've applied for as well... I will be replying to your email soon - I'm sorry for the delay! Love to your family in Christ!

Hey Brother Olson,

I have been reading Hudson Taylors bio recently and was reminded again how God seems to let the greatest servants go through the greatest trials. Because of the trials Hudson went threw he was able to pave the way for many more missionaries to travel into the reaches of China with the gospel. The greatest among us will be the least, and you have been one of the greatest servants I have known (along with one who has suffered so much). My family and I love and miss you all. I hope we have the chance to work alongside each other again before our time comes, or He comes and takes us home. Till that day.

Scott and Anna,
I read this post while listening to Matt Redman sing "You Never Let Go". I have to admit that it was very encouraging to be reading about such pain existing in this world and at the same time be reminded that no one can snatch us from the Father's hand and He will never leave us nor forsake us in our pain. Thank you for being honest and open with your lives. I can see Jesus in you. We love and miss y'all. Please remember Galatians 6:9 which says,"Let us not not grow weary in doing good for at the right time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up or quit."

Love,
